Activity Overview
Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are significant contributors to global blindness. Intravitreally injected agents targeted at vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have shifted the paradigm of care for these and other similar ocular diseases, albeit with a high treatment burden for most patients. New and emerging agents are being designed to reduce treatment burden through improved durability and better efficacy. Multidisciplinary management provided through collaborative efforts among optometrists and ophthalmologists can improve adherence and guide patients through the long-term care needed for these conditions.
This Community Practice Connection™ program provides an in-depth review of some of the key highlights from a virtual satellite symposium held in May 2023. This unique and engaging multi-media activity is ideal for the community-based optometrist and focuses on the practical aspects of traditional and pharmacologic treatment of retina disease. The program is designed for those who did not attend the live meeting and to help reinforce learnings for those who did.

Upon successful completion of this activity, you should be better prepared to:
- Describe the substantial clinical burden often associated with traditionally used vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME)
- Evaluate the most recent efficacy and safety clinical trial data surrounding novel agents with unique mechanisms of action (MOAs) for nAMD and DME treatment
- Identify the responsibilities of optometrists upon managing patients with nAMD or DME
- Design an effective multidisciplinary care approach between optometrists and ophthalmologists to provide optimal outcomes for nAMD and DME patients
