There are so many opportunities to help our patients and grow a practice that falls outside the realm of just exam, glasses, and contacts. Embracing new technologies in eyecare and medically focused optometry has improved our patient care – and ultimately the success of our entire practice.
One of these is specialty contact lenses. I fit my first Ortho-K lens in 1999 and my first scleral lens in 2009, and I fell in love with the way it changes lives and builds practice loyalty. I was one of the first Wave custom GP fitters using topography data and CAD software, and I built a large contact lens practice with this technology.
Recently I expanded my specialty contact lens practice with scleral mapping using the Pentacam® and Wave software, allowing for more predictable scleral alignment. Thereafter we added Eye Print Pro impression molded lenses to help with even the most advanced cases and to minimize patient visits.
Building a specialty contact lens practice means more complex needs that cannot be met with an online contact lens supplier. This level of quality eyecare is what keeps patients coming back, year after year.
Additionally, my passion for finding solutions to patient’s problems by understanding the root cause has led me on a journey to seek safe, noninvasive ways to prevent disease. We strive to utilize natural ways to promote and improve microvascular circulation, which allows the body to better repair itself.
We have seen vision improvements in our macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and diabetic retinopathy patients by utilizing near-infrared light (photobiomodulation), oxygen therapy via an ozone sauna, and pulsed electromagnetic fields (pemf).
We have had great success using microcurrent stimulation to help our patients with post herpetic neuralgia, and the addition of Neurolenses has provided lasting relief for so many of our chronic headache patients.
I have had a wonderful career as an optometrist, and after nearly 30 years I still feel excited about the future. The opportunities we have seized thus far have grown the practice to more than I ever thought possible, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
